Thanksgiving has come and gone. How was yours?
The Thanksgiving holiday is supposed to be all about gratitude, family and friends gathered around a richly adorned table enjoying food, familial fun and congenial conversation.
Instead, this year felt different for some. The overly long 2016-election season, with its abundance of rhetorical slings and arrows unmatched in recent history, was divisive rather than cohesive. It left many feeling disconnected from family and friends, wary and afraid of what kinds of holiday conversations might unfold.
Our hope, despite all the political negativity, is that this Thanksgiving brought out feasting and joy, kindness, mutual respect, and especially appreciation for all that we are, all that we have and all that we share.
Acceptance of differences – even if those differences never surface in conversation – is likely more challenging to achieve. Open hearts and open minds help.
Whatever our beliefs, remember the ‘ties that bind’ – family, shared history, love and compassion for one another, basic understanding at the least.
